GP2, Istanbul, Turkey, 2006GP2 was created in 2005 to replace Formula 3000 as the top feeder category for Formula One. The first two GP2 champions Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg subsequently found homes with F1 teams as did some of their closest rivals.

The series features cars with identical Dallara chassis and 4.0 litre V8 Renault engines. With slick tyres, minimal aerodynamic downforce and no driver aids the racing is often exceptionally close.

Most events feature two races - a feature race with a mandatory tyre stop, and a shorter sprint race. The grid for the feature race is set in a qualifying session; the sprint race grid is based on the results of the feature race with the top eight reversed.
